Interpret Us, Please!

February 19, 2009

As a follow-up to our post from a couple of days ago about English-speakers’ declining interest in learning other languages, there are a number of articles today in the European press about the European Commission’s difficulties finding native speakers of English to act as interpreters. Deutsche Welle reports that the E.C. has launched a campaign, complete with YouTube video, to attract interpreters into English. None of the articles linked to the video, so I had to go searching for it myself. Despite the frenetic drumbeats, it’s hard to make people listening intently through headphones look terribly exciting, and the voiceover reminds me of those old filmstrips we had to watch in elementary school. So it’s not the most dynamic recruitment video, but it’s a good overview of the job itself.
