Jamie Richards, former MFA in translation at Iowa and editor of eXchanges, returned to old stomping grounds Tuesday to read from her newly published translation, Jellyfish, by Giancarlo Pastore. The book, a lyric examination of illness and alienation, is composed through a series of short experimental narratives. What propels the story forward is the gorgeous and (at times delightfully) neurotic voice of the narrator. “Pastore seems to be in possession of a hundred different speeds,” wrote Arnaldo Colasanti, “[h]is strength is this velocity and dramatic intensity.” Richards has done a beautiful job transfering that intensity and shifting velocity into English. What’s more, she clearly relishes her task.
